Decked Out (Identity System)
Year: 2023
Instructor: Jennifer Sonderby
This event, held at the Waller Street Skatepark in San Francisco on June 23 2024, is a large-scale DIY workshop where skateboarders can fully build a skateboard and decorate its deck. It will be led by local artists from the Bay Area, who will also raffle their own painted decks. Proceeds of ticket sales will go to EduSkate, a youth outreach program in SF.
The communication goal was to connect art to skateboarding, while being authentic to skate culture. The concept development kept the DIY spirit. The imagery centers on spray painted and Xerox’d photographs of skateboarders doing tricks (courtesy of Six12 Media) and hand drawn icons. The textures were drawn from the spray paint, printer ink, and the grip tape of my own skateboard.
Research began the process, both visual and on-site, to learn deeply about the skateboarding subculture’s history, attributes, and values.
The skateboarding community in San Francisco was the main inspiration. They have a large interest in art and self expression, and fully customize their skateboards. They also create and combine tricks; theres no bounds to what they do—they brave the steep hills of Dolores and kick flip on the edge of Pier 7.
For them, their canvas is the city streets.
I visited the FTC skateshop on Haight St to talk to skaters and learn about the SF scene. One employee showed me the different skate brands based in the Bay Area and I admired the diverse range of expression.
Decks from SF Bay Area skate brands: Western Edition, Unity, Sprinkles.

Experimenting, printing, spraying, DIY-ing.
The identity system was applied to a logo, icons, posters, map, website, street banners, stickers, and a promotional video.
